Care was taken to format Quest: Science Fiction to match the standard ruleset dictated by Quest: Classic Fantasy. To the greatest extent possible, the sections in this book mirror the sections in the original so that players of the original Quest can quickly learn to play Quest: Science Fiction.
A major goal of Quest: Science Fiction is to allow the wealth of published science fiction and modern-world adventures to be used seamlessly with Quest's mechanics. Quest: Science Fiction can be used to play Traveller, Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, or your own custom science fiction settings. As an example, a free supplement for playing Traveller using Quest: Science Fiction is available for download; similar guides for other settings can be written if there is sufficient interest.
An excellent question is: How does this ruleset relate to the upcoming Quest: Cosmic Fantasy? The answer, simply, is that it doesn't -- they are two completely separate settings and aren't designed to compete with one another. Quest: Cosmic Fantasy will allow you to bring your Quest: Classic Fantasy characters into space, complete with all of their wonderous magical abilities. This promises to be an incredible expansion for the original Quest system. Quest: Science Fiction, however, assumes that there is no magic in the "real" world, so the Classic Fantasy rules and characters really don't fit in the setting. Furthermore, the original Quest rules do not provide the other essential abilities needed for a realistic modern or science fiction setting. Quest: Science Fiction provides those abilities as well as a coherent and consistent set of rules expansions for bringing the feel of Quest into the modern and far future settings. Finally, Quest: Science Fiction brings some much-needed rules for credit-based economies and miniatures combat.
